GMA Garnet™ abrasive is composed of natural Almandite garnet grains that are known for their natural hardness, durability and abrasive characteristics. It is a cost-effective alternative to silica sand, mineral slags and steel grits and shot as the perfect symbiosis of grain size, density and hardness/durability creates the optimum abrasive efficiency – lowest abrasive consumption (kg/m2) at the highest production rates (m2/hr).
In addition, GMA Garnet™ is recyclable up to 5 – 10 times (depending on the application) due to its superior toughness and low friability. Being environmentally inert, GMA Garnet™ meets all Occupational Health and Safety requirements and achieves the highest quality of processing standards in respect of mineral purity and the stringent requirements of ISO 11126-10:2000 for chloride and free silica content.
GMA Garnet™ is used as a blast cleaning abrasive in various industries around the world and is approved by major oil companies, shipyards and major paint manufacturers. It is suitable for all areas of surface preparation especially stainless steel, anti-magnetic steel and all specialty alloys as it is free of metallic iron. Special fine grades of GMA Garnet™ abrasive are also available for aluminium, turbine blades, fiberglass and other unique surface preparation applications.
Low Dusting Blast cleaning using GMA Garnet™ provides significantly lower dust emissions due to its inherent material toughness and rapid settling (high specific gravity). This ensures minimum disruption and danger to adjoining operations and improves operator visibility and safety.
High Productivity Very fast cutting is achieved with speed, large number and shape of grains impacting on the surface. The acceleration and speed of a grain in an air stream is a function of the inertia and hence the size of the grain. Smaller grains accelerate much more readily and impart higher impact energy to surfaces resulting in a superior cleaning rate – usually twice the m2/hr of conventional abrasives.
Low Consumption The unique grain size enables many more active grains impacting the surface and greatly reduces abrasive consumption.
Superior Surface Quality GMA Garnet™ grains clean deep into the cavities and pitted areas down to the bare metal, thoroughly removing all rust, soluble salts and other contamination. The blasted surface is free of embedment and rogue peaks and troughs. SA3 White Metal is effortlessly achieved. A surface profile of 50 – 75 microns* is also easily achieved along with a much greater number of peaks per unit area.
Improved Health & Safety and the Environment GMA Garnet™ is non-toxic with no silicosis hazard or risk of contamination from leachable heavy metals or radioactive substances. Disposal volumes are greatly reduced as a result of lower consumption and recycle ability.

Recycling provides garnet users a cost-effective and environmentally responsible option for disposing of used garnet that would otherwise be dumped as industrial waste. Recycling also maximizes the life-span of this non-renewable natural resource and significantly reduces the disposal volume of spent abrasive.
At the garnet processing facility, spent garnet which is sourced from blast cleaning and water-jet cutting activities is re-processed to remove all contaminants including dust, rust, paint flakes, metallic and non-metallic impurities. This is followed by precise sizing into various grades to suit end-user requirements. Strict sampling and quality control procedures ensure that sizing and purity are maintained to the highest standards.
The various grades of re-processed garnet branded as GMR Quality Processed Garnet™ including a range of fine and superfine abrasives for high tech applications are ready to be distributed for immediate re-use.
